The objective of Venezuela Report is to provide quality information, reports, news, translations, and original opinion and analysis articles in both English and Spanish, with the goal of bridging the significant gap between the political dialogue in Venezuela and the rest of the world, and raising awareness of the problems and challenges we see in both the legal system and governing model.
I am an international business lawyer and founding member of the law firm Amsterdam & Peroff, with a specialization in politically related cases sometimes involving issues of human rights and rule of law. Among other clients I represent in various countries, I represent the Venezuelan political prisoner Eligio Cedeño, who has spent two years behind bars despite a complete lack of evidence, verdicts, or regular procedure - a case characterized by a series of flagrant violations of due process.
The Cedeño case is one that is fought within a broken legal system,
and as such, it has become something much larger, representing the
fates of not just a handful of victims but dozens of others who have
seen their constitutional rights viciously trampled upon by the
judicial authorities of the current administration. This blog will pay
special attention to the issue of political prisoners in Venezuela, as
well as the use of the courts, prosecutors, regulators, police, and
official apparatus to arbitrarily target groups and individuals for
both political and personal vendetta.
