Everybody's been reading all the exciting news of President Medvedev's trip to Nigeria, and all the seemingly big energy deals he's been signing (we'll have more commentary on that later).
But I would respectfully point out that Gazprom really should have picked a better name for its joint venture with the Nigerians. Let's hope this was just one of those accidents, but somehow I get the feeling that they will stubbornly stick with the name.

I'm sure that was just a coincidence... Nobody is going to take it the wrong way in Russia, and, I should hope, in Nigeria. I think.

You are missing the point. Russia is in the midst of a massive PR campaign, spending millions on foreign experts to spruce up its image. It's not only Nigeria and Russia that are involved here, but the whole world. And this only proves how utterly out of touch with basic reality the people who rule Russia really are, how hopelessly unable to see themselves as others see them, to perceive the world accurately in a climate of jouranlistic repression and crackdown.
LR, you're probably right about that. Maybe Russia's hope is that this "Nigaz" business will not be important enough to be mentioned often in the world press, so that nobody is really going to make fun of this choice of name.
