U.S. Candidates Statements on Russian Recognition of Georgian Regions

Barack Obama's statement can be read here: "The United States should call for a meeting of the United Nations Security Council to condemn Russia's decision in coordination with our European allies. The U.S. should lead within the UN and other international forums to cast a clear and unrelenting light on the decision, and to further isolate Russia internationally because of its actions."

John McCain's statement can be read here: "Today's decision, the culmination of a long effort aimed at splitting these two regions away from Georgia, represents a major step forward in that process. Moscow's action deserves condemnation from the entire international community, and Russia must understand that its violations of international law carry consequences."

McCain's wife Cindy is also visiting refugees and survivors from the war in Georgia, right on the heels of Obama's VP Sen. Joe Biden.

I'm surprisingly sanguine about the general manner in which this issue is unfolding.

(1) Tbilisi is untouched.

(2) Merkel, Rice, Biden, Cindy all been on the ground in Georgia. Language gets tougher every day.

(3) Russia has been stripped naked before the world. It doesn't like what it sees.

(4) Massive boost to McCain's chances of being elected.

(5) Obama pigeonholed on Russia, policy set.

(6) Democrats and Republicans arguing over who will bash Russia more effectively.

Thanks, Mr. P!

The world can't really settle on a fixed long-term response until after the American elections. As long as Russian troops stay put, a sea-change will have occurred on Russia by this time next year and a cold war will be underway in earnest.

NATO, which out-monies, out-guns, out-peoples and out-everythings Russia, will be winning of course.

Russia could be out of the G-8, never would have happened otherwise, and faced with all kinds of trade sanctions, diplomatic snubs and a serious effort to get out information in Russia with an enhanced VOA/RFE network, which previously had been perishing.

That to be followed, of course, by a massive new arms race that will either bankrupt Russia in short order or leave it helplessly impotent militarily.

As is always the case in Russia, all that's really necessary is just to give them enough rope and then avert your eyes from the horror as they destroy themselves.
